Vegan Supplements and Protein Powders: 8 Picks With the Label Facts

Finding vegan supplements takes more label reading than it should: capsules can be gelatin, many omega-3s come from fish, and many protein powders are built on whey. This list is for vegans and anyone avoiding dairy who wants a protein powder or daily supplement that fits. The criterion: every pick is described as vegan, vegan friendly or Certified Plant Based by its own brand, on the label or the official product page.

How we picked

We checked every protein powder and supplement on Supercery and kept the ones whose brand states vegan status on the manufacturer’s label or product page. Eight products qualified: three protein powders and five supplements, from creatine and a multivitamin to a probiotic, a greens powder and an electrolyte mix. Each pick links the page that states the vegan claim, and each product page links the public reviews we summarized. We have not tested these products ourselves. A brand’s vegan claim is its own statement, not a third-party audit, unless a certification is named.

FAQ

What makes a supplement not vegan?

Common culprits are gelatin capsules and soft gels and fish oil. For example, the Nordic Naturals Vitamin D3 soft gel uses gelatin, so it is not on this list. Read the other ingredients line as well as the front label.

Is there a vegan source of omega-3?

Ritual Essential for Women gets its DHA from microalgae, per Ritual. The fish oils we carry, such as Carlson and Nordic Naturals, are made from fish.

Which vegan protein powder has the most protein per serving?

Naked Pea lists 27 g per 30 g serving, followed by Orgain at 21 g per two scoops and Ritual at 20 g. Serving sizes differ, so compare grams of protein against the scoop weight.

Does vegan mean allergen free?

No. Vegan only means no animal ingredients. Pea and other plant proteins can still be an issue for some people, so check the allergen statement on each label.
